CAREER NEWS – TERM 2

It’s been a busy Term two so far beginning with the Elevate incursion for Year 11: Study Sensei, which gave our students some valuable tips for studying their VCE program. This was followed by RMIT University and Deakin University visiting our school to present to our Year 12 students. More presentations are scheduled for later this Term and Term three.

We recently gave Year 10 students the opportunity to prepare for and take part in a mock interview exercise. The students were asked to prepare a resume for one of three jobs: one in a supermarket, one at a garden supplies store and one at a pizza restaurant. The students were also encouraged to dress in professional attire for the exercise and many took up this opportunity. Four interviews took place concurrently with interviewers the students had never met before. It certainly challenged some with their nerves, but all those who took part felt it was a worthwhile experience.

Having a part-time job during high school is beneficial in many ways. It teaches students to learn time-management, develop organisational skills and certainly increases their confidence in preparation for whatever pathway they decide to take after high school. Contrary to popular belief, working less than 10 hours a week can be beneficial for high school students.

Supporting your child in preparing for the world of work after school can be a challenge. Casualisation and globalisation of the workforce, automation and rapid advances in technology will all have an impact in your child’s navigation of the world of work.

The Australian Government has developed resources to support parents through their Future Ready Career Education Portal.

Guest Speaker: Dr Nawshad Haque, Senior Scientist, CSIRO and parent

Our Year 12 cohort had the privilege of hearing Dr Nawshad Haque speak about his career journey as a migrant from Bangladesh, his studies and work in several countries, and how important careers in STEM are. He reminded us that we live in a country rich in resources, but that we should learn how to reduce our emissions by using technology like solar power and hydrogen. He encouraged our students to seek out careers in science, especially if they have a passion for this, and he touched on just a few careers in this huge area: mining, energy, and technology.

He used the mobile phone as an example of technology that uses over 30 elements in its construction, including gold, silver and copper, and we worked out that the average number of phones already owned/used by students was around 5 each! He challenged us about what happens to all our dead mobile phones and how they contain lots of precious and useful components that can be recycled.

We are very grateful to Dr Haque for coming to speak to Year 12 and look forward to inviting other members of our school community to come and present to our students.
